This half day Wine Tour, commencing at 9.45am and finishing
around 3pm gives you the opportunity to sample the wines
for which Montalcino is most famous - the Rosso di Montalcino,
Super Tuscans, Brunello di Montalcino, Vin Santo desert
wine and the Grappa di Brunello.
Our first stop is in a medium sized vineyard that has
spectacular views of the city of Montalcino and surrounding
countryside and makes excellent wines using traditional
methods. They have very knowledgeable guides who will
tell you about the area, how the wine is made, show you
the cellars and then we proceed to the elegant tasting
room to try the Rosso di Montalcino, a Super Tuscan, a
Brunello and if it takes your fancy a Grappa or the Vin
Santo. They also make their own very tasty Extra Virgin
Olive oil which again you can sample.
The second vineyard is a much smaller family run affair
where you start by tasting the young wine from the barrels.
This gives you the chance to see and taste the progression
through the aging process. Here the wine is completely
organic and again of very high quality. After the barrel
tasting we proceed to the finished bottle products - Ross
di Montalcino and Brunello as well as an excellent Grappa.
Cheese, bread and other snacks as well as their olive
oil are there to accompany the final tasting.
Our last stop will be for lunch and there is a choice.
We can continue along the Wine theme by going to another
small and exclusive family run vineyard where the lunch
will be antipasti dishes and a pasta dish accompanied
by a selection of wines (Rosso and Brunello di Montalcino)
Alternatively we can go to an organic farm and lunch
outside overlooking the countryside near Pienza. Here
you can tour the farm, see the animals, learn how they
make the Pecorino Cheese and enjoy a relaxed and abundant
lunch made up from all the multitude of wonderful items
that the farm produces.
