Siena and Florence are the capitals of Chianti. This
is a wine zone that stretches between the two cities covering
an area of 70,000 hectares. It is here that we take you
to discover the delights of the Chianti Classico. Our
Tour takes you to a selection of the many beautiful vineyards,
which produce this wonderful wine, made with the Sangiovese
grape, often mixed with Canaiolo Nero, Colorino and other
local grapes. Some vineyards also add international varieties
such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The soil is responsible
for the flowery bouquet, with scents of wild berries and
sometimes the fresh odour of tobacco. But it is the scent
of violets, which really characterises the Chianti Classico.
We take you on the winding roads between small villages
and beautiful countryside to our various locations.
Our first stop is the home of Chianti Classico, a vineyard
owner by a Baron whose family started the tradition and
set the 'rules' for what we know as Chianti Classico today.
You'll get the complete history of the vineyard and a
tour of the vast cellars. The conclusion to the tour here
is a very elegant wine tasting with the chance to sample
three of their top products. Afterwards you are also welcome
to try other wines in their wine shop before we head off
for the next stop.
We follow this visit with a relaxed lunch in a small
friendly local restaurant. Here you have the chance to
sample other local wines whilst enjoying a traditional
Tuscan lunch.
Early afternoon we go a very contrasting vineyard, small
and family owned but also with centuries of tradition.
There is a photo exhibition with photos dating back to
the 1800's showing the workers of the period and other
interesting features relating to the estate. In addition
a mini museum with a stone olive press, wooden wine making
machinery and various farming tools. The wine tasting
itself takes place on the veranda and includes the Chianti
Classico accompanied with cheese and crackers and then
a wonderful desert wine accompanied with dark chocolate
. . . a treat not to be missed!
Chianti is a stunning area and the wine complements the
beauty. We promise you an interesting and varied day out.
